HE SAID
The phone rang.
Ok, he said. I’ll be there in a minute.
She looked at him and smiled.
I’ll be back, he said.
She breathed in his cologne as he bent to kiss her forehead.
I’m just going for a walk, he said.
She grabbed onto his plaid shirt, the one he liked so much.
Don’t be long, she said.
I’ll be back soon, he said.
She put water in the kettle. It was cold outside, and she wanted tea to be ready for when he’d come back.
I won’t be long, he had said.
She waited as the sky grew dark. The arms moved so slowly on the clock, and yet, they moved too fast.
I’ll be back, he had said.
The tea was cold when she got up and went to her room. She crawled in the freezing sheets and buried her face in the pillow.
He wasn’t coming back.
She knew one day would come where he would leave and never come back. She didn’t know that day would be today.
She would always remember the strong cologne he would wear, and the soft plaid shirts he liked so much.
She would remember the way she felt safe when he was home, and the ever reassuring way he would leave her, gun tucked in the back of his pants.
She knew one day, he would die at war; there was always a war raging in the streets. She didn’t know the day would be today.
I love you, he had said.
But he still left to never come back.
