TEA AND MEMORIES
She liked jasmine tea. When she let it infuse enough, it had a bitter taste on top of the floral fragrance that reminded her of a different time, a time when she was young and falling in love in a foreign country. She could almost hear Shanghai in the morning, waking to the fog for another busy day. She could smell the market’s strange food exposed to her for the first time; squids, spiky red fruits, jelly. She could see the uneven skyline of rising buildings in both the English and local fashions. And his eyes, dark, reaching deep in her soul. Oh, was he ever dreamy! But he wouldn’t come back to England with her, he had said his place was right here, in the bustling city.
“Janet? Janet! Are you listening to what I’m saying? Marie, she’s not listening!”
As her friends looked at her, the woman smiled, oblivious of their rambling, still in the distant China of her memories.
