The Little Girl on the Red Bench

THE LITTLE GIRL ON THE RED BENCH

The little girl on the red bench waited every Saturday afternoon for her mother to pick her up from her play date. She sang along music playing in her head and let her feet swing in the air in rhythm.

Mama had said to not speak with strangers, so when people asked if she was okay, she simply smiled and nodded. When people offered her food or candies, or to go play with them, she shook her head.

Mama had said to always stay in view of other people; the red bench was noticeable in the green playground. So she stayed there, where people would see her. She didn’t understand, but Mama said it was supposed to keep her safe while she waited.

The little girl on the red bench had been waiting for what seemed liked hours for her mother to pick her up, but she was late. Mama was never late. So where was she?
